Jeanne List Walkey Rice

It is with great sorrow we announce the death of our quick witted, strong willed, wonderful mother, Jeanne List Walkey Rice. Born to Paul and Grace Gaffin List on September 30, 1922 in Peebles, Ohio, she was a 1939 Reynoldsburg High School graduate. She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Harry James ?Jim? Walkey, who lost his life in WWII; our beloved father, Wendell Kent Rice, who fell in love with her while she was on a visit to Vermont and followed her back to Ohio; her son, Wendell Kent Rice II, her first born who brought her joy; and her sister, Pauline List Murray, whom she adored. She is survived by her son, Doug Barb Rice of Logan; daughter, Wendy Green of Canal Winchester; grandchildren Wendell Kent Becky Rice III of Nevada; Randi Terry Hudson of Logan and four beautiful great-grandsons Ashton, Nathaniel, Rory and Aiden Hudson; sister, Kathleen List Susil Spicer of Florida; and a brother, Fred Ethel List of Vermont. Her career as a medical records transcriptionist included work at Mount Carmel Hospital, Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Miami Heart Institute and St. John?s Hospital in Santa Monica. Her life journey as a volunteer began following retirement. She gave her dedication and hard work to many organizations including Peace Pilgrim, SIFAT, HEART, Record for the Blind, ECHO, Church of the Brethren Woodland Alters, New Windsor Service Center, Habitat for Humanity, Warren Wilson College and The Fuller Center for Housing. A voracious reader of real life stories and poetry, she also loved cryptoquotes, word games and crossword puzzles, frequently challenging us to see who could finish first. She never met a rock or tree she didn?t like! We lovingly referred to her as the ?Johnny Appleseed of rocks? as she left a trail of scattered pebbles wherever she travelled. Her disease may have robbed her of her memory, but it never took away her sense of humor or diminished her strength of character. She was a spirited, fun, fair, honest and supportive wife and mother and we will miss her deeply. The family motto ?we?re ugly, but we?re healthy? was coined by her along with ?it?s not how you look, but how you feel?.? She instilled in us it?s not what you have, but who you are that is important. In her papers she refers to her children as ?you three, my real treasures? and it is that love, that sense of devotion that we will remember the rest of our lives. At her request, she will be cremated and her remains scattered under a tree. A celebration gathering will be held at a later date. ?Gotcha last?? condolences could be mailed to 121 Beaty St. Canal Winchester, OH 43110
