Rev. John E. Cooper, age 95, was born in Williamsburg County, South Caroline on April 4, 1917 to the late Mary Wilson Cooper and Daniel Cooper. He attended some school in South Carolina and learned many skills on the farm with his father. He came to Columbus where he worked as a presser of clothing at Rose Cleaners and Swans Cleaners. His last job of employment was with Construction Company working as a brick mason before he retired. He departed this life May 6, 2012.
John was a faithful member of the Mt. Vernon Ave. Missionary Baptist Church, 1358 Mt. Vernon Ave., Columbus where his name John Cooper is one of names on the corner stone. Rev. Cooper sang in the men?s choirs, worked with the finance committee, and worked wherever he was needed to serve in the church. He served until his health failed him. He is preceded in death by his parents, 8 brothers, 6 sisters, 1 grandson, Vincent L. Darling, daughter, Johnnie Pearl Cooper Willis, wife Alice Cooper and sister Aida Jennings.
Rev. Cooper leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Juanita Cooper Darling; son, Garry Dana Cooper, La Tonya Porter and Margaret John Reece; grandsons, Victor L. Darling, Dennis Nita Cooper, John E. Jessica Cooper II; nieces Karmel Cooper, Kimberley Romel Johnson, Mary Horton, Hattie Hightower, Frances Pounds and Mary McKnight. Rev. Cooper, had 9 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren, many other relatives and friends.
Our father set the example for life for all to follow Christ. We will remember his long prayers at mealtime, miss his joyful smile, telling the lifestyles in South Carolina, our farewell always ended in prayer and with a hugs and words beehive yourself. Celebration of Life at 1 PM Friday, May 11, 2012 at Mt. Vernon Ave. Missionary Baptist Church, 1358 Mt. Vernon Ave., Columbus, Pastor Henry O. Leftridge officiating. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation at the church where family will receive friends from 12 noon till time of service. Arrangements by Edwards Funeral Service, 1166 Parsons Ave., Columbus.
