Otis T. "Terrall" Owensby

February 8, 1954 — June 6, 2022

Columbus, Ohio

Otis T. Owensby (“Terrall”), age 68, was called home to our heavenly Father on June 6, 2022. He was born on February 8, 1954, in Columbus, Ohio, to Helen J. Owensby Holland and Otis Owensby.

Terrall attended Central High School in Columbus. He served in the United States Army for 11 years where he earned the rank of Supply Sergeant leading the burial squad. He was awarded the Sharpshooter Weapons badge, served in Vietnam and Panama, and later enlisted in the U.S. Army Reserve. After his service in the military, he operated as a mechanic in Columbus, Ohio.

His first love was fishing as he followed the line of fishermen - his grandfather, father, and big sister’s husband - who regularly took him fishing as a child and during his teenage years. As an adult and fellow fisherman, he enjoyed sitting quietly for hours while taking in the beauty and sounds of the water, and he revered the fight of [catching] the fish. Terrall proudly carried on the tradition of fishing with his sons and grandsons.

Additionally, he loved spending quality time with family and friends. Grilling outdoors and sharing his prepared meals were his favorite expressions of companionship. Terrall also had a special affinity with children and dogs. He adored them and they were drawn to his loving and warmhearted spirit.

Terrall was preceded in death by his parents, Helen J. Owensby Holland and Otis Owensby; sister, Helen L. Lawson; and grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 45 years, Cheryl Owensby; daughter, Shanikka Terelle Flinn; sons, Olajuwon Terrell Owensby, Edwin Michael Goins, Otis Sutton, and Shanta Sutton; sisters, Freda C. Robertson (“Cookie”), and Sylvia Sanders; grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives; and special mention, cousin, and lifelong friend, Stanley Brockman, who he regarded as the brother he never had.
