Detective Sergeant John Chapman, 50 of Clarksville, went to be with his lord and savior Thursday, March 24, 2011 at the Hospice of Dayton, he had been battling colon cancer since January 2009. He is survived by his wife Melissa A. Chapman of Clarksville, they were married April 26, 2005 in Key West, FL

John was born November 19, 1960 in Falls Church, VA; son of the late Thomas and Doris Chapman. He was a member of the Bible Baptist Church. John began his journey in law enforcement in his teen-age years as a member of the Largo Police Department Florida Explorer Program. John transitioned from the Explorer program to the Largo Police Academy where he was hired as a full-time police officer at the age of 19. John was employed as police officer with Largo P.D. for 13 years. John spent 3 years of his employment at Largo P.D. as an undercover narcotics officer. In addition to his duties at Largo P.D., John lived on property owned by the Pinellas County Florida School System providing campus security for 8 years.

In 1992 John moved to Ohio to be near family. In 1993 John graduated from the Clark State Police Academy at which time he received his Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy Certificate. John was hired by the Clinton County Sheriff?s Office on August 30, 1993 as a Deputy Sheriff assigned to the Southwest Regional Drug Task Force. John was assigned to the task force until 1999. John was assigned to the Detective division at the Sheriff?s Office at which time he investigated narcotics cases and other major crimes. In 2004 John was promoted to his current rank of Detective Sergeant. John investigated and solved many complex cases during his career and received multiple awards of recognition from the Sheriff?s Office.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by five children; Brandon Back, Jessica Wayne Shirah, Bradley Chapman, Austin Pollitt and Alyssa Pollitt; a grandchild, Ashlyn Shirah; step-father, Larry Sherman of Florida, two sisters Anissa Sherman of Colorado and Dana Nay of Virginia and a host of friends and family.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday April 1st. at the Bible Baptist Church, 55 Megan Dr. Wilmington, with Pastor Kelly McInerney officiating, with burial in the New Antioch Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the church.
